Assistive Technologies for Visually Impaired Persons

The Bayes Centre funded Daniel Muñoz, Eric Laurier, Chris Speed (ECA) to undertake a pilot project exploring how AI-based assistive technologies support the daily mobility of people with visual impairments (VI). The pilot project:

1. Used video analysis to understand how AI-based technologies are being adopted by VI people, and where the societal challenges of such adoption lie.

2. Employed a participatory approach to undertake the pilot study and establish links with stakeholders for the future project.

3. Conducted a multi-stakeholder workshop to develop the research methods and knowledge exchange for the future project.

The pilot provided a preliminary insight into the uses of assistive technologies. The feedback from disability organisations and industry-based R&D entities will shape the methodology and general strategy (recruitment of participants, impact, knowledge exchange etc.) of a larger scale project on assistive technologies for visually impaired persons. The pilot project was organised across human geography and design informatics.

We reported on the project in the form of a podcast.

There is also a brief written report.
